To Sua Ocean Trench

The To Sua Giant Swimming Hole is one of the most unique historical sites located on the coastal side of Upolu in the village of Lotofaga.

To Sua literally means ‘giant swimming hole’, a 30 meter deep swimming hole filled with crystal clear turquoise ocean water accessed by a ladder.

This Samoan water hole was formed by a cave-in of an ancient lava tube system that connects to the ocean, and thousands of years of erosion made it into the unbelievably beautiful spot it is now. There is also a second sinkhole without water and the 2 are joined by a lava tube.

To Sua Ocean Trench was initially used as a traditional swimming hole by the villagers, but it was opened to the public in the early 1990s and over the years it has become a popular tourist attraction. The trench is considered sacred by the village and visitors are asked to respect the local customs and traditions while visiting.

This site also offers lush gardens, day fales with cliff top views, blowholes, sea arches and rock pools to explore.
